Trip-Hop Music: Thievery Corporation - Until The Morning
Sep 02, 2010
The Cosmic Lounge presents Trip-Hop Music: 'Until The Morning' by Thievery Corporation, feat. Emiliana Torrini. "Thievery Corporation is a Washington DC-based production and DJ duo consisting of Rob Garza and Eric Hilton and their supporting artists. Their music can be characterized as downtempo/electronica with influences of dub, acid jazz, indian classical and brazilian styles fused together with a lounge aesthetic. Thievery Corporation is on the Eighteenth Street Lounge record label named after the swank DC club owned by Eric Hilton, but several of their singles and EP's appear on the 4AD and !K7 labels. In 2002, they released The Richest Man in Babylon on their ESL label. This fifteen track album is similar in sound and timbre to The Mirror Conspiracy and features performances by vocalists Emiliana Torrini, Pam Bricker, and LouLou. Indra, the third track from The Mirror Conspiracy, was featured in the opening shots of The West Wing season five episode Gaza and in an MTV(India) promo for the programme Non Stop Hits. The group also received support from Scrubs star, Zach Braff, when Braff used the title track on 'Lebanese Blonde (1998) on the soundtrack of his film Garden State. This resulted in boosted sales for the group after the film's release." www.last.fm

Trip-Hop Music: Portishead - It Could Be Sweet
Sep 01, 2010
The Cosmic Lounge presents Trip-Hop Music: 'It Could Be Sweet' by Portishead. "Portishead is a band from Bristol, England, named after the small coastal town of Portishead ('Pore-tiss-hed'), 12 miles west of Bristol. With their use of live jazz samples and intentionally lo-fi sound, the band has been cited as influential by many modern musicians including guitarist Wes Borland, Hip-Hop star Kanye West, Evanescence and underground producer DJ DangerMouse. The band was formed in 1991, by keyboardist/multi-instrumentalist Geoff Barrow and singer Beth Gibbons. Barrow had previously worked with two other bands from Bristol, Massive Attack and Tricky, and decided to name his new endeavour after his hometown. After releasing a short film (To Kill A Dead Man) and its accompanying music, Portishead signed a record deal with Go! Beat and their first album, Dummy, was released in 1994, and featured heavy contributions from guitarist Adrian Utley. In spite of the band's media-shyness, the album gained universal critical acclaim and was successful on both sides of the Atlantic, spawning two hit singles, "Glory Box" and "Sour Times". The album won the British Mercury Music Prize in 1995 beating albums such as 'Definitely Maybe' by Oasis and Leftfield's 'Leftism'. Portishead has often been used as accompanying music in the media. Such examples include car adverts, Channel 4 intermissions and the teenage drama series Sugar Rush. Their second album, Portishead, was released in 1997, and ...

Trip-Hop Music: Lemongrass - Sunrise On Fujiyama
Sep 02, 2010
The Cosmic Lounge presents Trip-Hop Music: 'Sunrise On Fujiyama' by Lemongrass. "Roland Voss, aka Lemongrass, moved through several musical phases before hitting his stride as a drum'n'bass/downtempo producer in the late '90s. The German-born Voss began taking drum lessons in 1974, and played with a variety of funk and (mostly) jazz ensembles over the rest of the decade. When the '80s arrived, Voss became interested in new wave, and from there began experimenting with electronic means of sound production. During the second half of the '80s, Voss founded a number of projects -- mostly dance groups, but also a punk band called Klappstuhl -- and landed in a Berlin band called New Nations, where he began working in earnest with electronic instruments and sampling techniques. Voss eventually released his first album, 1993's breakbeat-oriented Wuwei, under the alias Succa V, and soon began working with drummer Torsten Kötter as Jungle-Moon; their first release in 1994 marked Voss' first full-fledged venture into jungle. Voss spent the mid-'90s working on large-scale multimedia projects with a variety of other artists. He made his debut as Lemongrass in 1997 with a drum'n'bass cover of Gershwin's "Summertime," which appeared on the small German label Incoming's Submerged compilation. The first Lemongrass full-length, Dramatic Universe, followed in 1998, and found Voss mixing his early jazz influences into a variety of jungle and haunting trip-hop productions. The album's ...
Trip-Hop Music: Hefner - Dive Into You
Aug 27, 2010
The Cosmic Lounge presents Trip-Hop Music: 'Dive Into You' by Hefner. "Hefner is Lee Jones who released an album called Residue, a number of 12s and remixes on Inertia Records. Residue sold 85000 albums independently through Inertia Records. Lee Jones, in response, took the project on the road around Europe, playing throughout Holland, Germany, Italy and France. Also appearing on national TV in both Germany and Holland. The album was voted number 3 in the BBC Radio 1 urban albums poll. Then all went quiet. He worked on Josees solo album, Lost Souls Dancing, and moved to Berlin. At this time in order to satisfy demand Inertia released a compilation of his best remixes called Reworks featuring his versions of tunes by Lamb, 4 Hero, Omar faruk Takbilek and others and took time off to produce some other artists. In 2003 Inertia hooked Hefner up with Frazey Ford, lead singer of The Be Good Tanyas, a fantastic rootsy, folky band from Vancouver. The resulting material was magical but due to recording commitments to EMI the project had to be stalled until the Be Good Tanyas album was finally released. As of the end of 2006 the project has been revitalised with the partnership working together again. An album is due at the end of 2007." www.last.fm
